Fig. 1. Separation of assembled procapsids from virions by sucrose-gradient centrifugation. Radiolabelled 14S subunits (3 µl; 33000 c.p.m.) were added to the cell-free system (25 µl). Incubation was for 15 h at 34 °C. After incubation, samples were cooled on ice and possible assembled procapsids were separated from virions as described in the text. The cell-free system was mock-programmed (no addition of vRNA) and extraneous 14S subunits were added 1 h p.p. (A) or the cell-free system was programmed with vRNA and extraneous 14S subunits were added 1 h p.p. (B) or 8 h p.p. (C).
