Fig. 1. A schematic diagram of an atomic force microscope used for imaging viruses in liquids. AFM fluid cells, sealed by O rings, are probed by a silicon nitride, ultra-sharp stylus, which moves in a raster manner over the surface of specified objects. A reflected laser beam amplifies and reports deflections of the stylus, attached to a cantilever, to a split photodiode.
