Fig. 1. B lymphocyte-derived cytokines are critical for maintaining the maturation of FDCs. These include membrane lymphotoxin alpha1/beta2, which signals exclusively through the lymphotoxin beta receptor, and soluble tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha), which signals through the TNF-receptor 1 (TNF-R1). Both receptors are expressed on the FDC and/or its precursor cell. In the absence of either of the above cytokines or their corresponding receptors, FDCs do not differentiate.
