
Microbiology in SCHOOLS Fund
Teachers
working in SGM member schools are invited to apply for grants of up to £1000 to support microbiology teaching initiatives and events. All topics in microbiology will be considered but projects linked to climate change, health and food are particularly encouraged.
RULES
- Staff employed in schools that are currently paid-up School Corporate Members of the Society are eligible to apply to the scheme.
- Grants can be used to support a range of microbiology-related projects such as:
- running a school- or college-based science week activity (e.g. hands-on or programme of talks)
- supporting microbiology activities in an out-of-school science club
- buying materials and equipment outside of normal department resources to support a microbiology activity
- organizing a visit to or from a working microbiologist
- a class visit to a microbiology laboratory to carry out activities
- Funding will not be provided to meet costs that should be covered by school budgets.
- Maximum available grant is £1000 (no more than £200 in expenses may be claimed per visiting microbiologist).
- Applicants must provide a detailed description of the proposed initiative, which it is anticipated will take place within 12 months of the grant award, full costings and evidence of any collaborations or other sponsorship.
- Applications to support practical activities should also include a safety risk assessment and evidence of insurance arrangements for activities outside school.
- All claims for payment must be supported by invoices and receipts.
- All grant awardees must write a short report of the activity (illustrated by photographs) which may be published in Microbiology Today.
- Applications should be made no less than three months before the planned activity.
- Applications must be made on the appropriate form. THREE copies of the completed application form and all supplementary documentation must be submitted for consideration.

There is no closing date for receipt of applications which will be considered on a first come, first served basis during the period 1 January - 31 December.
