Programme
Insect-borne microbial pathogens are responsible for large numbers of deaths of animals
and humans each year. Malaria, transmitted by Mosquitos (Anopholes), is responsible
for up to 1 million human deaths per annum while Trypanosomiasis, which is transmitted
by the Tsetse fly, affects livestock in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and South America
and is responsible for the loss of large numbers of animals and the perpetuation of the
poverty associated with many of these regions.
The treatment of many insect-mediated diseases is still poorly developed and our
understanding of the interaction of these pathogens with the insect and human immune
systems is incomplete. This meeting will address the role of insects in transmitting such
diseases, how these pathogens affect the insect immune response and how they
manipulate the mammalian immune response during the infection process. In addition,
the role of climate change in increasing the range of Anopholes, Tsetse flies and other
insects will be addressed as this presents a significant threat to currently unaffected
regions of the World.
