The Study of Plant Disease Epidemics

L.V. Madden, G. Hughes & F. van den Bosch, Eds

American Phytopathological Society Press (2007)

This is a comprehensive textbook that covers aspects related to the temporal and spatial dynamics of plant disease. The authors provide a critical description of different modelling approaches to understand, quantify and compare epidemics. It is a good reference book for plant pathologists working on the discipline and for graduate students specializing in this topic. Without doubt, the interested reader needs a strong background on the use of mathematical and statistical models, but as this is an essential aspect of the discipline I found the text very instructive. The summary and further reading at the end of each chapter and the References and Index section confirm that the concepts and literature covering this topic have been thoroughly addressed. A detraction that may be improved in future editions is the page format, which would benefit from broader margins and highlighting of important concepts and definitions.
