Plant Pathogenic Bacteria Genomics and Molecular Biology

R.W. Jackson, Ed.

Caister Academic Press (2009)

This is a timely book that is a good reference text appropriate for institutional libraries and, particularly, for researchers working on the molecular biology of bacterial phytopathogens. It is an expert and readable collection of chapters on cutting edge issues in prokaryotic molecular plant pathology - including bacterial plant pathogen evolution, effector secretion systems, aspects of signalling, and innate immunity in plants. As in all multi-authored texts, chapter quality and style of presentation vary. However, by highlighting the power of bioinformatics and comparative genomics approaches, the authors and the Editor have done a good job in representative coverage and integration of modern molecular phytopathology themes using examples from multiple bacteria. The introductory chapter in particular sets the scene with a good overview of various important issues in the field. The book would be an excellent starting point for non-expert readers looking for a fast track route into molecular aspects of bacterial plant pathogens.
