MycoAlbum CD Introductory Mycology Laboratory Review

G.L. Barron

Mycographics (2006)

This CD is an impressive visual resource containing over 1,000 illustrations of fungi and their morphological structures, set within a comprehensive and generally well-written text. The presentation is attractive, making use of FlipAlbum software to give the impression of leafing through a book but with navigation tabs and an effective index to allow rapid access to specific images if required. The Instructor's Version also has an additional album containing over 500 downloadable images for incorporation into PowerPoint presentations. For a lecturer wishing to interest students in fungi, often with limited timetable exposure, there are few resources that better capture the beauty of this group of organisms. Although there are numerous images available on the web, having them all together in an easily accessible and taxonomically structured form is a big benefit. For the student, the opportunity to browse this collection of beautiful images in such an attractive format is well worth the very modest investment. (Note that the CD requires Windows ME, 2000, XP or higher and does not work with Macintosh computers).
