Biotechnology, 5th edn
J.E. Smith
Cambridge University Press (2009)
The defining aim of Prof. Smith's Biotechnology (5th edn) is to re-establish the correct understanding of the true meaning of biotechnology.
This book certainly provides a comprehensive and accessible review of the discipline, in which molecular biology approaches are not ignored, but sit comfortably alongside discussions of fermentation technology and the public perception of biotechnology. The lucid explanations of each topic are supported throughout the text by a series of clear schematic images and informative tables which should aid student appreciation of the topics. I particularly liked Smith's biotechnology tree, which illustrates how many disciplines and enabling technologies can input into the evolution of a biotechnological product.
The range of applications covered, combined with the accessible style and a helpful glossary, will permit undergraduate students studying biological sciences and related disciplines, such as chemical engineering, to benefit from this book. I would therefore recommend the text for institutional purchase and its adoption by academics delivering courses on biotechnology.
