Candida albicans: Methods & Protocols

Springer-Verlag GmbH & Co. KG (2009)

Human pathogenic fungi, especially Candida albicans, are significant opportunist pathogens of immunocompromised and medically compromised patients. Remarkable advances in our understanding of how these micro-organisms cause disease have occurred over the last decade, due to the availability of whole-genome DNA sequences. This book contains 18 succinct chapters that focus on some important aspects of molecular methodology. Chapters are arranged into six sections, covering immunological methods, methods for investigating virulence in vivo and in vitro, biofilm models, proteomic and genomic analysis, and strain typing and identification. The book does not cover all of these areas exhaustively, some sections are outdated, where others are too short and would benefit from inclusion of additional key material; e.g. the 'strain typing and identification' section should have covered MLST analysis. Each chapter contains concise protocols, together with a useful Notes section providing tips on troubleshooting. This book will be a useful resource for researchers who work in the field. It is priced at £59.99 or US$99 and is a worthwhile institutional purchase.
