Virus Diseases of Plants, 2-CD set
O.W. Barnett
American Phytopathological Society Press (2009)
I wish I'd had this CD set when I started out lecturing on plant-virus interactions. The image database covers a vast range of viruses affecting temperate and tropical plants, including arable, horticultural and ornamental crops. It contains every conceivable symptom or electron micrograph that a lecturer in this area might need. Disc 2 contains three course tutorials (as PDFs and narrated slide shows) focused on wheat, grapevine and potato diseases and cover the viruses themselves, vectoring, diagnosis and control. The tutorials emphasize North American problems and are devised for applied scientists, but are still an excellent means of getting up to speed on diseases threatening these crops. The wheat tutorial proved its worth to a colleague about to interview for a wheat pathology position. Even on older PCs the discs run friendly search and slide show construction tools. I'd recommend the collection to anyone lecturing in basic or applied plant virology.
